Diorama - Ftm

Ftm is a hand-painted diorama by luyssport, a gatehouse on a floating island, a traveller on the path, and something dark standing behind the arch. The model is optimized here; the scene matches its original look.

The idea

The other scenes are about light: a spotlight on a statue, lightning over the sea, glowing lines. This one has no lights at all. The light and shade are painted into the textures, so the job is to put the painting on screen without changing it, i wanted to see how this would behave in a R3F enviroment.

Under the hood

  • Drawn as painted. Every material is unlit, and tone mapping is turned off for them, so each pixel is the texture's own colour. The ink lines are a second, slightly larger copy of the model with its faces flipped, drawn in black: only its edges show around each shape.
  • 12.3 MB down to 1.27 MB. Seven 1024 px JPEG textures re-encoded as WebP, the geometry compressed with Draco, and normals dropped from every mesh that's never lit.
  • A sky that never gets closer. The painted sky dome is drawn first, without depth, centred on the camera wherever the orbit takes it, so it reads as infinitely far away.
  • Depth of field for free on the monster. It's translucent, so it writes no depth: the depth of field sees the sky behind it and blurs it just as softly, while the island stays sharp. The blur runs at half resolution, and a frame costs about 2 ms of GPU time.
